Are 3D printers the next revolution?

The Internet and more specifically, the world wide web, was an amazing innovation and is what everyone relies on today. We have Tim Berners-Lee from the UK to thank for that. We’ve seen a variety of companies take advantage of this technology, namely Google. But what about technology that could reach the level Tim Berners-Lee reached with his invention of the Internet? Could 3D Printers really be the next major technological innovation?

Many computers have some sort of printer connected to them, mainly an ink-jet printer to print documents and photos. 3D printers open a new world of opportunities.

The idea that you can design something in software and then simply ‘print’ it, is CRAZY! Like all printers, the 3D printer has to have cartridges, in this case containing plastic instead of ink. The idea that a hospital can print out a human organ (who knows what will be possible?) is why this technology is amazing!

For the near future, the Cartridges for the 3D printers will be expensive for home owners, so it’s likely that your local town or city will have huge 3D printers, meaning you can design and order your products and then use your local 3D printing centre to produce the goods – then you’ll go and collect them. This makes for great innovation and for new companies with great ideas to try them at a much lower cost compared to custom tooling and minimum production runs.
