The Death Of Nexus Phones ?

Recently, a rumor made it’s way onto the internet about a new Google programme aimed to replace the beloved Nexus line of mobile phones with Android Silver.

Rather than Google’s old plan of getting companies such as Asus and LG to construct the Nexus phones under Google specifications and run stock android, they have apparently planned to persuade the top android smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC to release an Android Silver edition of their phones. This will mean a price drop and the installation of stock android on handsets along with the instant android updates that we have become accustomed to with Nexus devices.

Android Silver phones are also said to come with applications like ‘find my iphone’ and a 24/7 help center app like the Amazon ‘Mayday’ service. Like Amazon Mayday, the service will provide access to free video calls to real people which can help.

This would be a revolutionary approach that will allow Google to compete with Apple’s chain of Genius bars in their retail stores but in a typically Google techie way.

This sort of idea was seen on the ‘Google Play Editions’ of popular smartphones recently that ran stock android although unfortunately did not make it to the UK

Whilst making a wider variety of stock android phones at a cheaper price with all bloatware and skins removed is a great idea, it is highly unlikely unless Google can do some serious magic here. I highly doubt that these massive manufactures of smartphones would be willing to lower the price of their phones and remove all of their own add-on software that comes bundled with the phones. This would erode margins on their flagship handsets and may be too bitter a pill to swallow.

As usual, feel free to share your thoughts on Android Silver down below.
Do you think Google can pull this off?
